Celebrating Black History Month 2025: Stephanie Turner
As Compass Group continues to celebrate Black History Month, we’ve been highlighting associates whose inspiring journeys embody the theme of “African Americans and Labor.” Meet someone whose experiences remind us of the profound impact of family support and the pivotal role of hard work and perseverance in achieving personal and professional success.
“Hello, I’m Stephanie Turner, an AV manager with Waveguide in Atlanta at the headquarters of an iconic beverage company. Thirteen years ago, I started my career with humble beginnings as a mic handler and worked my way through roles like night tech, schedule coordinator, and operations coordinator before becoming a manager – a decision I cherish.
“This journey wasn’t easy, but I have the best support system imaginable – my parents. My mom’s daily motivational texts kickstart my mornings, while my dad’s honest advice guides me through challenges. My older brother Nick, younger brother Mickey, and I share a special bond as siblings, but being the only girl has been a unique blessing. My parents’ hard work instilled in me the value of dedication and giving back. Treating them to a family beach vacation remains one of my proudest moments.
“In a side pursuit as a personal trainer, I booked my first major fitness shoot for a fitness app in Tampa in 2022. Leading up to it, anxiety threatened to overwhelm me, but my mom’s unwavering faith and prayers gave me the courage to push forward. My parents have always been my secret to success. On the morning of the shoot, I opened up to the makeup artist about my nerves, and her encouragement – along with a prayer – helped me step into my authenticity.
“The experience taught me that growth often comes from discomfort. By embracing who I am and letting go of overthinking, I performed better than I’d imagined. That moment reinforced that challenges signal growth and that something bigger is on the horizon. I now welcome those feelings, knowing I’m capable of elevating to a new level.
“When I was offered the AV manager role, I felt both excitement and apprehension. Balancing leadership with personal goals seemed daunting, but the company believed in me, and that belief gave me confidence. Before accepting, I sought advice from my team and parents and turned to prayer. Coming from within the team, I knew firsthand what we needed in a leader and soon realized that the company valued me for who I am. I vowed to help the team thrive while not losing sight of my personal growth.
“From day one, I focused on building a team driven by the goal of improving daily. Together, we’ve achieved incredible milestones, earning respect across the organization’s campus. My team’s dedication inspires me to exceed expectations and make a real difference. I’m also grateful for a supportive management team that uplifts and challenges me. Surrounding yourself with people who reflect the future you envision is key to growth.
“No one wants to stay the same. To get better, we must embrace change and grow into it. It’s a journey that requires courage and determination, but it’s one we’re all capable of taking.
“You got this, we got this!”
